AUGUST is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month and to coincide with the celebration and in support of breastfeeding, I would like to highlight it in this week’s article.
Our government through the Department of Health considers breastfeeding a major aspect of maternal and child care thus it came up with Republic Act 10028 otherwise known as the Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009.
This Act embodies the implementing rules and guidelines on breastfeeding. It encourages exclusive breastfeeding for babies up to six months of age. It sets and mandates hospitals, both government and private, to strictly implement this starting with rooming-in of newborns within 24 hours of delivery, and initiating latching on and breastfeeding within an hour after delivery.
Breastfeeding Awareness Month is being celebrated every first Saturday of August. The worldwide simultaneous event is called the Global Big Latch On where breastfeeding mothers gather and breastfeed their babies for one whole minute.
In Iloilo City, the celebration took place on Aug. 5 and was called “HAKAB NA.” “Hakab” is the Filipino word for latch. It was spearheaded by Breastfeeding Ilonggas (BFI).
The first Hakab was started in 2013 by the group composed of nine like-minded Ilongga mothers whose advocacy was to promote breastfeeding.
One of the founding members, Anjee Vios, is a friend of mine. She said the group came about when they found out that in 2012, Iloilo had the third lowest breastfeeding rate.
According to her, the response was very promising and the attendance at Hakab has been steadily growing year after year, proof that exclusive breastfeeding is gaining acceptance again.
So why the need to breastfeed?
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), “Breastfeeding ensures the best possible health and best developmental and psychosocial outcomes for the infant. Aside from providing basic nutrition for the baby, breast milk contains all the necessary and specific vitamins and nutrients they need during their first six months of life.
Colostrum, the first milk produced by the mammary glands in late pregnancy and a few days after birth serves as the baby’s first natural immunization as it is packed with disease-fighting substances known as secretory immunoglobulins that protect the baby’s mucous membranes in the throat, lungs and intestines, thereby preventing illnesses common to these areas. Because the composition is specific for babies, the incidence of allergies is lower.
A lot of studies have proven that exclusive breastfeeding reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), Diabetes Type 1 and 2, childhood cancers and inflammatory bowel disease. And since the amount of calories is tailor fit for babies, obesity is also prevented.
Aside from these, studies indicate that breastfed babies have higher intelligence scores and are less likely to develop problems with behavior and learning as they grow older.
For moms, breastfeeding will help them lose weight because of increased caloric requirements needed to feed the baby. It also lowers the risk of depression because of hormonal changes that encourage maternal caregiving and bonding.
Breastfeeding seems to be linked to a reduced risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer as well as metabolic diseases such as hypertension, heart diseases, diabetes mellitus 2 and elevated cholesterol. It is also a natural way of contraception. And of course, the savings you get from not buying milk formula and feeding bottles and nipples.
Come to think of it, a newborn has basically three demands: 1) the warmth of the mother, 2) food from a mother’s breast and 3) security in the knowledge of a mother’s presence. Breastfeeding fulfills all three.
But what are the perceived hindrances and what could be done about these?
The clamor for a longer maternity leave from 90 to 120 days has been approved by the Senate. This will give moms longer time to bond with their babies as well as to breastfeed. Companies are starting to allow frequent breaks for their lactating employees in order for them to express their breast milk or to breastfeed if feasible.
Malls and offices likewise have designated breastfeeding facilities so breastfeeding moms could easily access these areas to feed their babies. Hopefully the stigma that breastfeeding in public is embarrassing could be eliminated. Instead, let us encourage and admire moms who breastfeed their babies in public places discretely.

Breast milk is still and will always be best for babies. So babies…hakab na!
