MANILA – Barangay officials might be tasked to regulate traffic in Metro Manila and other urban areas.
They can be effective traffic enforcers because they have the “experience and familiarity of their respective areas,” Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III had said.
Traffic congestion costs Metro Manila P3 billion a day, a study by the Japan International Cooperation Agency showed.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and local governments were asked to deputize barangay officials to improve traffic enforcement in critical intersections, especially during rush hours.
“In our continuing search for solutions to the traffic gridlocks, we have to engage our barangay chiefs who have intimate knowledge of their locality,” said Pimentel.
“Many solutions have been tried before. This one could very well help in promoting solutions,” he said.
Meanwhile Sen. Loren Legarda wants sustainable and alternative transportation methods.
She filed Senate Bill 914, which seeks the provision of walkways and bicycle lanes, parking spaces and racks to encourage people to walk and ride a bike.
“Because of traffic, people spend so much time on the road, become less productive and more tired, and spend less time with their families,” Legarda said, adding that this “affects not only the economy but also the health and personal relations of our people.”/PN
