MANILA – Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas governor Nestor Espenilla, who is battling tongue cancer, said Monday he was “physically fine” but would limit his public appearances.
It was Espenilla’s first public comments since he announced in October that he was extending his medical leave.
“I have temporary speaking limitations basically,” Espenilla said. “Please bear with me. But otherwise I’m physically fine.”
Espenilla sat out the Monetary Board’s Sept. 27 and Nov. 15 meetings, wherein the overnight borrowing rate was raised by a total of 75 basis points.
The Bangko Sentral under Espenilla has raised the benchmark by 1.75 percentage points this year, to 4.75 percent from 3 percent at the start of the year. (ABS-CBN News/PN)
