BACOLOD City – The Bacolod City Traffic Authority Office (BTAO) will be strictly enforcing the “no jaywalking” policy on major streets starting March 27 and the “no helmet” policy starting April 3.
Majority of motorcycle-related accident fatalities in this city were caused by severe head injuries, said Superintendent Luisito Acebuche, BTAO head.
BTAO records show that of the 372 aggregate motorcycle-related accidents in recent years, 272 persons did not wear helmets.
Violators of the helmet policy will be fine P300 by BTAO, aside from the penalty fees that the Land Transportation Office will impose, said Acebuche.
As for the “no jaywalking” policy, Acebuche said this infraction causes traffic congestion to the already problematic road situation of Bacolod City.
Jaywalkers will be fined, in the following order:
* first offense — P100 on the spot; if the pedestrian has no money to pay or refuses to pay, he or she will be brought to the BTAO office to render community service;
* second offense — P200 or community service; and
* third offense — P300 or community service.
Acebuche said an “anti-jaywalking” unit will be formed to ensure the proper implementation of the policy.
BTAO will initially focus on two major roads — Lacson and Araneta streets./PN
