KALIBO, Aklan â The local government of Buruanga, Aklan was cited as a Red Orchid Award Hall of Famer by the Department of Health.
Buruanga won the Red Orchid Award for three consecutive years since 2015 for its implementation of the â100-percent tobacco-free environment programâ using the World Health Organizationâs (WHO) MPOWER framework.
MPOWER is an acronym for six proven ways to control tobacco use. These are monitoring tobacco use and prevention policies, protecting people from tobacco smoke, offering help to quit tobacco use, warning of the dangers of tobacco, enforcing bans on tobacco advertising, and raising taxes on tobacco products.
Mayor Concepion Labindao received the plaque of recognition on Nov. 22 at the Oriental Hotel in Leyte.
The municipality of Ibajay, Aklan, Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital in this capital town and the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. Aklan field office also received the Red Orchid Award for their efforts in campaigning against smoking in communities, hospitals and government offices.
According to the WHO, at least 10 Filipinos die every hour because of tobacco-related diseases. It added that there over 17.3 million Filipino smokers aged 15 years old and above. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
