SANMAN Promotions head Jim Claude Manangquil has been awarded as the “Best Promoter” in the prestigious 17th Gabriel “Flash” Elorde Boxing Memorial Awards and Banquet of Champions on Saturday night at the Tent of the Manila Hotel.

The 24-year-old General Santos-native Manangquil is the youngest recipient of the annual award. He is also the world’s youngest boxing promoter and manager, entering the business at 14-years old in 2007.

“I was encouraged by my brother John Ray Manangquil in the sport of boxing. In fact, I also trained as a boxer because of him,” Manangquil said.

Started as JM Boxing Promotions, it later grew and became Sanman Promotions with the help of his brother John Ray and their good friend and fellow businessman Dexter Tan.

Sanman made nine promotions last year and had a total of seven championship fights – International Boxing Federation (one), World Boxing Council (two), World Boxing Federation (three) and Philippine titles (two).

“I am very thankful for the award. I dedicate this to all Sanman members Dexter Tan, my brother John Ray Manangquil and the staff” said Manangquil. “And also to all the Sanman fighters. For without them, I will not achieve anything.”

Sanman boxers John Vincent Moralde, Reymart Gaballo, Mike Plania, Randy Petalcorin, and Romero Duno were also cited in this year’s awarding rites which was presented by the family of the late Filipino boxer.

Elorde Hall of Fame honorees Manny Pacquiao and Donnie Nietes, meanwhile, were honored with the Award of Distinction for their continuing feat as world champions even after they have already been enshrined into the Elorde Hall of Fame.

Pacquiao, the current WBO welterweight champion, was inducted into the Elorde Hall of Fame in 2012 after he won seven straight world crowns, which he accumulated in a 10-year campaign starting 2000.

Nietes became world champion in three divisions – in the minimumweight, light flyweight and super flyweight categories – retaining all these titles against the very best in each division for seven years frin 2007 and until he was inducted into the Elorde Hall of Fame in 2015.

The Award of Distinction, one of the major awards of the Elorde Awards Night, is conferred to a Filipino boxer who has already been enshrined to the Elorde Hall of Fame.

The Adamson University Lady Falcons maintained its stature as the top softball team in the country, while the Ateneo Blue Eagles made a triumphant return to the baseball throne in UAAP Season 79 action that closed on Friday.

The Lady Falcons extended its domination to seven years with a 3-1 conquest of the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses in Game 2 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Despite losing ace pitcher Mary Ann Antolihao to a season-ending ACL injury, the Golden Tigresses gallantly fought hard, but the Lady Falcons showed tremendous toughness to sweep the best-of-three series.

“Fighter yang UST. Nakita ninyo naman from last year, dikit din yan,” Lady Falcons coach Ana Santiago told the Buzzer Beater. “Kami iniisip namin na malakas lahat ang kalaban.”

“If you want to win, you don’t want to rely on one person. Dapat mag-rely kayo as a whole. Yun ang ini-explain ko sa mga players,” added Santiago, who steered the Lady Falcons to 73 straight wins before losing to the Golden Tigresses last year.

Angelie Ursabia was solid in her final year for the Lady Falcons as she bagged the season MVP, Most Homeruns and Best Slugger plums, while Lyca Basa, who struck out eight batters in the series-clinching win, was named the Finals MVP./PN
