MANILA — Yellow. Black. Or Peach? Whatever your favorite color is, just expect a colorful State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 28.
Deputy Spokesperson Abigail Valte said she is sure President Benigno Aquino III, who is set to conduct his fifth Sona, won’t wear a yellow barong next week.
“Hindi naman nagsusuot ng dilaw na barong ang Pangulo,” a laughing Valte said in a press conference on Friday.
Valte, however, said she is yet to confirm if Aquino will wear a barong Tagalog by top designer Paul Cabral.
“Meron naman pong usual si Mr. Cabral but I am not quite sure. If it’s Paul, I will ask. I will inquire kung nag-prepare ng special for this year,” the official also said.
She clarified that Aquino’s Cabinet members are not required to wear a specific color at this year’s Sona.
“Everyone is free to wear the color that would flatter their figures, let’s put it at that,” Valte said.
Also, Valte hinted she won’t definitely wear a yellow gown as it will make her look like “Spongebob.”
Militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) earlier encouraged the public to wear a peach ribbon to indicate its support to impeach the President.
Ex-congressman Augusto “Boboy” Syjuco Jr. also urged those who are not happy with the Aquino government to wear black.
The move is to “show our disappointment with (his administration),” Syjuco, an ally of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, said.
He criticized Aquino for telling supporters to wear a yellow ribbon.
His call divides the nation and is “unpresidentiable,” said Syjuco./PN
