Cadiao gets death threat after police order to stop ‘Peryahan’

“What concerns me is that Antiqueños who are already poor and whose livelihoods are affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 would still be enticed to bet their last money hoping to win,” says Gov. Rhodora Cadiao.

SAN JOSE, Antique – Gov. Rhodora Cadiao received a death threat after directing the local police to stop the operation of Peryahan ng Bayan.

In July, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) sought Cadiao’s help to stop Peryahan. It said it had not authorized its operation.

Peryahan ng Bayan is similar to Small Town Lottery with bet collectors going around and winning numbers are drawn. The bet ranges from P5 to P20.

“I received a threat in July because of this gambling activity,” Cadiao said, adding that it could have been sent by someone connected to the game.

The threat was referred to the Antique Police Provincial Office (APPO) for investigation.

Cadiao said Perhayan had been on guerilla-type of operation for almost three months already.

“What concerns me is that Antiqueños who are already poor and whose livelihoods are affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 would still be enticed to bet their last money hoping to win,” she said.
