MANILA – Team Phikoma Cadiz City made their presence felt in the 2021 Smart MVP Sports Foundation Online Regional CPJ Speed Kicking Championships recently.
The Dexter Chavez-mentored taekwondo crew took home a total of 14 medals – three golds, six silvers and five bronze medals – in the one-day virtual taekwondo tournament.
Among the gold medal winners were Lyr Sendico in cadet flyweight, Jovymar Gane in the bantamweight and Janwell Lunas in the grade school finweight category.
The Cadiz City-based taekwondo stable got three silvers from cadet jins Jeincis Heward Carian (finweight), Rhiane Wyeth Llaguno (featherweight) and Jerea Eliza Grace Peñas (middleweight).
Other runner-up finishers for the squads were Rein Sydney Llaguno in the junior featherweight, Maxinne Rhaine Geli in the grade school finweight and Airies Dave Yanson in junior finweight.
Capturing bronze medals were Ana Rose Carido in cadet light weight; Dexie Leen Chavez in junior light heavyweight; Pia Mariz Openio in grade school flyweight; John Aethan Apostol in junior bantamweight; and Kate Venice Singson in finweight.
Chavez said he was delighted with the medal achievements of his taekwondo jins in their final competition for the year.
“As coach, I am proud with how we performed in this tournament. We are just hoping that by next year, if the pandemic situation permits, we can once again compete physically and not just virtually,” Chavez said.
Meanwhile, Negros Taekwondo Union-Tigers New Gen also made a strong performance in the poomsae and speed kicking event of the said virtual competition.
The Bacolod City-based squad has eight golds, five silvers and eight bronze medals but the taekwondo stable opted not to release the names of their medallists./PN
