SAN JOSE, Antique – Ryan Calama-an provided the spark on offense and defense as WVRAA (West Visayas Regional Athletic Association) scored an 89-84 win over Region III (CLRAA) in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa boy’s secondary basketball on Wednesday at Biniyaran Sports Complex.

The Leon, Iloilo-native Calama-an came up with clutch baskets as well as standing his ground on defense with a number of blocks, as WVRAA clinched a quarterfinals seat.

With the score tied at 81-all, Calama-an surged WVRAA ahead at 85-81 on a dunk. After CLRAA cut the deficit to 85-84, Calama-an had four straight points – a short stab and two free throws – to clinch the win for WVRAA.

“I am glad with our performance of my players. We know that we’re up against a strong team in CLRAA but my players showed their heart and now we are in the quarterfinals,” WVRAA coach Rodel Camacho told Panay News.

WVRAA fell by as much as 11 points early in the game, but the team then went on a huge second quarter run behind Calama-an and Marvin Cuerbo to take a 43-40 lead at halftime.

The game became tight in the second half with both teams acting on their  chance to take the lead. WVRAA was up by four points late in the game before CLRAA had its last run to tie the count at 81-all.

Meanwhile, WVRAA girl’s secondary basketball squad has stretched its winning streak to three following a 66-57 victory over the Davao Region (Region XI) on Tuesday night.

In boy’s secondary football, the WVRAA squad leaned on conversions by Karlo Lustan and Jake Michael Salazar for a 2-2 draw with ARMM./PN
