ANTIQUE – The local government unit (LGU) of Caluya, Antique is calling for donations of materials for making improvised oil spill booms.
Mayor Rigil Kent Lim said the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) is preparing for the possible spread of oil spills in other island barangays.
“Bilang paghahanda sa posible pang mga lugar na maaaring maapektuhan ng oil spill, ang lokal na pamahalaan ng Caluya, Antique, ay nais humingi ng tulong upang buhaying muli ang kulturang mayroon ang mga Caluyanhons,” said Lim.
Improvised oil spill booms use materials such as rice straws (dayami), rice hulls (ipa ng palay), coconut husks (bunot ng niyog), plastic bottles/gallons, sacks, straw lace and ropes.
Those who wish to donate may coordinate with the municipal hall.
Those who want to volunteer in making improvised oil spill booms may coordinate with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office or Municipal Tourism Office.
As of yesterday noon, March 6, three areas in Caluya were affected by the oil spill.
Below is the list of areas with oil spills.
* Sitio Liwagao, Barangay Sibolo – two kilometers (40 drums or more)
* Sitio Sabang, Barangay Tinogboc – four kilometers (40 drums or more)
* Barangay Semirara – two kilometers (minimum of two drums)
Meanwhile, here below is the number of affected individuals or families.
* Sitio Sabang, Brgy. Tinogboc – 100 households or 465 individuals
* Sitio Liwagao, Brgy. Sibolo – 149 households or 601 individuals
* Barangay Semirara – 320 households or 1,063 individuals
Ten families or 30 individuals were also evacuated from Sitio Liwagao, Barangay Sibolo.
On Saturday, March 4, Lim issued Executive Order No. 15 suspending all fishing activities within the vicinity of Sitio Sabang and Sitio Tambak, Semirara Island, Nagubat Island, and Liwagao Island.
