Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings head coach Tim Cone expects Greg Slaughter (foreground, right) to be back sometime in their PBA Philippine Cup semifinals series against San Miguel Beermen. PBA MEDIA BUREAU

MANILA ā€“ Greg Slaughter is nursing a bum ankle, and his participation in Game 1 of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kingsā€™ PBA Philippine Cup semifinals campaign that starts tonight remains doubtful.

Kings head coach Tim Cone said he badly needs the Filipino-American center to play defense against June Mar Fajardo of San Miguel Beermen.

The best-of-seven semis series will be at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

ā€œOur big question mark obviously is whether Greg is gonna play. He might not play (in Game 1) but we do expect him to be back sometime in the semis,ā€ said the 20-time PBA champion coach.

ā€œNow we face the monster. Thatā€™s San Miguel. You can refer that to San Miguel or you can refer that to June Mar,ā€ Cone added. ā€œGreg (Slaughter) would have to be a great equalizer. We just hope we donā€™t fall too far behind without him.ā€

Slaughter, a former PBA Rookie of the Year awardee, has been one of the vital cogs for Kings this conference, averaging 16.71 points and 10.43 rebounds per outing before the injury.

In the absence of Slaughter, Kings managed to move to the semifinals with a two-game sweep over Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, which also missed the services of James Yap and Chris Tiu.

ā€œItā€™s always a big relief to get through the quarters. To me, itā€™s the hardest series to win, the quarter series,ā€ Cone said. ā€œAgain, San Miguel, what can you say? They won three championships in a row in this conference for a reason.ā€/PN
