Capitol doc warns Ilonggos against summer diseases

ILOILO – Heat stroke. Sore eyes. Chickenpox. Mumps. Scabies and other skin disorders. Flu and other viral and bacterial infections. Even food poisoning and drowning.

People must be wary of these illnesses and conditions the cases of which increase during the dry season, according to the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

During this period each year, water supply is usually a concern, said PHO chief Dr. Patricia Grade Trabado.

A drop in supply may lead people to limit their use of water such as for drinking, washing hands or taking a bath or cleaning utensils, thereby sacrificing hygiene and sanitation, she explained.

“Kon indi ka maligo naga-dry ang skin. Kon ma-expose ka sa init may tsansa nga maga-dry pa gid. The skin becomes susceptible to infection kon sagad mo kalot, may tsansa nga mapilas, may chance nga magka-secondary bacterial infection,” said Trabado.

Taking a bath daily is highly recommended, she stressed, because cleanliness bolsters health.

Sore eyes or conjunctivitis often leads to blindness, if not given proper treatment. It can easily develop due to harmful bacteria or viruses that easily transfer from one to person to another. The spread of eye infection can actually be prevented through frequent and correct hand-washing.

Trabado also stressed the importance of shielding one’s self from the scorching heat of the sun this summer by using umbrellas and sunblock lotion.

People with hypertension and other diseases that could be aggravated by severe heat and too much sun exposure are advised to stay home, especially between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when the temperature is at its peak.

Don’t forget to constantly rehydrate by drinking clean water, Trabado added.

During beach excursions, elders must be watchful of children and remind them not to venture too far away from the shore, said Trabado.

Also, make sure all food are cooked well and kept in clean containers to avoid food poisoning, the PHO chief stressed.

Trabado also emphasized the importance of seeking medical help immediately for any health issues./PN
