ILOILO – Peace and order is a principal responsibility of the police and the armed forces, Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. stressed.
Defensor was reacting to comments that there was not much update on peace and order in his sixth State of the Province Address (SOPA) on Tuesday.
Vice Gov. Christine Garin was among those who noticed.
She commended him for highlighting capitol’s achievements and beneficial partnerships but noted that the province’s peace and order situation was not discussed much. She opined that Iloilo is peaceful nevertheless.
“Waay question nga responsibilidad ta man, but just like in movies, we are not the principal actor, manugbulig lang kita,” said Defensor.
Governors may exercise supervisory functions as far as peace and order is concerned but only to a certain extent, he said.
“Gina-ako ta na nga responsibilidad ta pero indi mayor nga responsibilidad,” said Defensor.
He added: “Ano pagsiling ta nga kita ang madikta kag kita ang masabat sang sitwayson sang peace and order? Indi gani kita ka-appoint sang chief of police sang munisipyo, indi man ta ka-appoint sang provincial commander. Ang pundo sang (police) wala man gaagi sa aton.
“Pero ginatinguhaan ta man tanan-tanan. Kag waay man sang malain nga sitwasyon insofar as peace and order is concerned. Malinong man ang probinsya sang Iloilo.”
As for illegal drugs, Defensor said Iloilo was recognized by the Philippine National Police as Most Outstanding Local Government Unit in Region 6 in 2015 for its support to and effort in the antidrug campaign.
The governor mentioned the recognition in his SOPA.
“Pamatuod ini sang aton wala untat nga kampanya batok sa kriminalidad kasubong sang ilegal nga droga, ilegal nga pasugal kag ilegal nga pagpangisda agud mapabilin nga malinong kag matawhay ang bug-os nga probinsya,” he said in his speech./PN
