Capiz cited for outstanding practices, innovations in solid waste management

CAPIZ – The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), an attached agency of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), recognized this province for its outstanding practices and innovations in solid waste management.

The awarding was held on June 7 during the Summit on Philippine National Plan Action for the Prevention, Reduction, and Management of Marine Litter at Diversion 21 Hotel, Manduriao, Iloilo City.

Gov. Esteban Evan Contreras received the award with Acting Capiz Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (CaPENRO) chief, Atty. Emilyn Arboleda-Depon and Environment Management Services (EMS) unit head Engr. Apple Grace Lata.

Among the cited innovative or outstanding practices of Capiz were the following:

* Sisid Basurero, a yearly underwater clean up drive as part of the Ocean Month Celebration to raise awareness and impart knowledge to the community on the importance of coastal ecosystem

* yearly coastal cleanup drive together with EMB-DENR in Capiz, fisherfolks association and CaPENRO staff

* information education and communication campaign through social media on proper environmental protection, preservation and sustainability

* “Palit Basura kag Seed” / Forest-on-Wheels, visiting localities to collect residual wastes to be used s main component in making eco-bricks

Also awarded during the summit were the Capiz municipalities of Panay, Ivisan, Dao, and Dumarao.

Ivisan and Dumarao were cited for their materials recovery facility (MRF) operation while Dao and Panay were hailed for their waste upcycling for crafts production, and for composting, respectively./PN
