ROXAS City – Last week’s excessive rain brought about by tropical depression “Usman” did not prevent a couple to exchange their marriage vows in Barangay Jagnaya, Jamindan, Capiz.
“Bagyong Usman ka lang, taga-Jamindan kami,” read the Facebook caption of couple Simeon and Glory Llorente’s photo showing how they and their wedding entourage braved the flood that the heavy rains brought on Saturday, Dec. 29.
The knee-deep flood entered the St. Vincent Ferrer Church where the couple was married. The ceremony was officiated by Rev. Father Aristedes Pedrajas.
“Wala pa ya tubig nagsulod sa simbahan sang mga 9 a.m. pero pag-abot 10 a.m. didto na nagsaka ang tubig,” resident Sarah Jane Deloso told Panay News.
Deloso said it was the first time flood entered the church, adding: “Ginabaha man kami in the past pero indi kapareho sini.”
Records from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office showed that 13 towns in Capiz have been submerged due to the heavy rains last week.
This affected 53 barangays, said Judy Grace Pelaez of Aksyon Tabang. She added that a total of 160 families have evacuated.
“Usman” has dropped large volumes of rainwater in Luzon and Visayas on Dec. 29 to 30, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration.
The state weather bureau said in Masbate City, the two-day rain brought more than the usual amount of December rainwater.
“Usman” weakened into a low pressure area after it made landfall in Borongan, Eastern Samar, it added./PN
