CAPIZ – The Department of Agriculture (DA) in Western Visayas turned over to the provincial government of Capiz the very first greenhouse with hydroponics facility in the province.

DA regional director Remelyn Recoter led the turnover of the facility located at the Governor’s Mansion in Barangay Lanot, Roxas City on Nov. 19.

The P1-million greenhouse project uses hydroponics technology to provide sustainable, accessible and affordable locally grown food in the communities and to lessen the impacts of the pandemic, especially in the urban areas.

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants indoors without using any soil. Instead of pulling mineral nutrients needed for growth from the ground, plants get all of their nutrition through a nutrient solution supplied to their roots.

Gov. Esteban Evan Contreras and Provincial Agriculturist Sylvia Dela Cruz cited DA-6 for the assistance.

“Ang amo nga pasilidad gamiton para sa pagpasangkad sang mga pamaagi sang pagpananum. Pinaagi sini mahimo na nga makapatubo sang tanom gamit gid lamang ang tubig nga may nutrisyun kag wala na sang lapok/duta kag compost,” said Contreras.

The facility, the fifth greenhouse project grant in the region, is part of the One DA Reform Agenda thrust of the department to modernize agricultural approaches to build a resilient food system through urban farming./PN
