Capiz logs nine dengue deaths

CAPIZ – This province has so far recorded nine deaths due to dengue, according to the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

Data from the PHO showed that from January 1 to September 21, three deaths were logged in Roxas City, two in Pontevedra and one each in Dao, Dumarao, Panit-an, and Sapi-an.

The PHO has also recorded a total of 2,877 cases.

Dengue fever, transmitted by the bite of an Aedes mosquito infected with a dengue virus, causes flu-like symptoms including severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pains, and rash.

More severe forms can develop into dengue hemorrhagic fever, which can be fatal.

Last month, Capiz was placed under a state of calamity due to the sharp increase in dengue cases.

Gov. Fredenil Castro immediately ordered the PHO to intensify its fogging operation particularly in areas with high dengue cases.

Meanwhile, despite the data, the Department of Health (DOH) said the cases are slowly going down due to the continued information and clean-up drive as well as the conduct of massive fogging operation.

The DOH also reminded the public to always practice the 5S strategy to combat the dengue: search and destroy mosquito breeding places, secure self-protection, seek early consultation, support fogging and spraying in hotspot areas, and sustain hydration./PN
