ROXAS City – The province of Capiz has celebrated its 75th anniversary of liberation on Dec. 20.
“Let us all remember the sacrifices of our war veterans and the heroism of our Capisnon freedom fighters who fought for the liberation of our province on this day,” the Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office (PTCAO) said on its social media post.
A musical concert dubbed “Saludo” formed part of the commemoration.
The province was liberated from the clutches of the Japanese forces, which lasted for two years and eight months on Dec. 20, 1944, through the gallantry and heroism of Capiceño freedom fighters.
The Japanese guerillas arrived in the province on April 16, 1942 and established garrisons in this city and the other towns until local revolutionary heroes conducted a three-pronged attack on the Japanese military camps which toppled down the intruders.
Sangguniang Panlalawigan Resolution No. 98 in 2010 formally declared Dec. 20 as Capiz Liberation Day.
It also called for a yearly commemoration of the historic event through PTCAO in partnership with the Veterans Federation of the Philippines-Capiz to pay tribute to Capiceño veterans and heroes who fought for the freedom of the province and other parts in Panay Island from the control of the Japanese soldiers.(With a report from PIA/PN)
