ROXAS City – The provincial government of Capiz is launching the 1st Capiz International Triathlon Meet (CITM) on Dec. 3.
Gov. Antonio del Rosario said the event will improve the locals’ sporting experience and boost local tourism.
Males and females are allowed to compete in groups to test their endurance in cycling, running and swimming.
Children will compete under the relay format. They will vie for the Capiz Tri-Aksyon Cup.
From People’s Park in the coastal village of Baybay here, competitors will swim two loops and clockwise in an inverted triangle with markers for a total distance of 1.6 kilometers.
Then, the adults will change their attire and ride a bike to the municipality of Panay and back to the city for a total distance of 54 kilometers.
Panay is home to the biggest bell in Asia. It is in the belfry of the Santa Monica Church.
Participants will then run in a 20-kilometer course which includes Villareal Stadium, one of the biggest stadiums in Western Visayas, and different parts of the city.
The CITM is expected to draw local and foreign crowds and become a part of the CAPIZtahan Festival in either April 16 or 17, 2017.
CAPIZtahan is the annual celebration of the charter anniversary of the province of Capiz. A major attraction of the festival is the nighttime parade of lights.
Betsy Medalla, the first Asian to swim in the Robbin Island channel in South Africa, has committed to attend the launching of the Capiz triathlon.
According to Capiz Triathlon Chairman Jose Borres, “there are favorable responses from different international triathlon organizations.” Celebrities into triathlons are being invited to come, he added.
Participants in triathlon often use the sport to improve or maintain their physical fitness. With each sport being an endurance event, training for a triathlon provides cardiovascular exercise benefits.
Additionally, triathletes encounter fewer injuries than those who only use running as part of their exercise routine due to the incorporation of low impact swim and bike training. (RJ Mijares, CapizAksyon News Center/PN)
