Capiz under state of calamity due to ‘Paeng’

CAPIZ – This province is now under a state of calamity.  Typhoon “Paeng” displaced its over 42,000 families.

During its Oct. 29 special session, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) of Capiz approved the recommendation of the Capiz Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) to place the entire province under a state of calamity due to the massive effects of the typhoon.

Based on the PDRRMC’s situational report signed by Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) and Vice Governor James “Mitang” Magbanua, who was the acting governor, as of 10 a.m. on Oct. 29, 2022 the number of barangays affected by the flooding already reached 252.

“Paeng” displaced a total of 42,550 families or 141,875 individuals.

The latest report showed 2,504 families taking shelter at different evacuation centers with a total of 9,384 people, while the rest either stayed in their houses or with their relatives.

So far, there has been one confirmed casualty due to flashflood in Tapaz town.

The victim was JP Buendia, 28, of Barangay Roxas, but was temporarily residing in the town’s Barangay Carida.

Buendia was swept away by the strong current of water while crossing the river in Barangay San Roque on Oct. 27.

A search and retrieval team recovered Buendia’s body in a sitio in Barangay San Carida on Oct. 28.

In the meantime, based on the report of the Regional DRRMC, around 300 houses in the province have been partially damaged while seven were totally damaged.

Following the declaration, the province will be using its quick response fund to assist the affected families.

The provincial government continues to distribute relief packs to affected families with the help of the Philippine Army, Philippine Coast Guard, Capiz Citizens Action Group Inc., Philippine Red Cross, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, Provincial Information Office, and PSWDO./PN
