ROXAS City – A remorseful firefighter was seeking forgiveness from the family of the mother and daughter accidentally hit by a vehicle he was driving in Panitan, Capiz.
The 35-year-old Melia Baclas of Barangay Agluway, Panitan and her 6-year-old daughter died.
They were walking along a national road when rammed by the car driven by Fire Officer 1 Jay Paul Bernales on March 2, police said.
The victims sustained serious injuries on various parts of their bodies. They were pronounced “dead on arrival” in a district hospital.
Bernales said he never meant to hit the victims.
The firefighter was on his way home to Barangay Poblacion Ilawod, Maayon town at the time.
He just got off work and was “very tired,” and dozed off while driving, Bernales said. He noticed the victims and applied brakes but it was too late, he told the police.
Bernales said he brought the victims to the nearest hospital, proof that it was not his intent to hurt them.
The fire officer assured the family of the victims that he will provide financial assistance and make amends.
The Panitan police station took him in custody./PN
