Carlos Yulo bags 3 golds in Asian Artistic Gymnastics

MANILA – Filipino gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo showed his dominance in the 2023 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships held over the weekend at the OCBC Arena in Singapore.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics campaigner finished the competition with five total medals, three golds, one silver and one bronze as he moved on to the World Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp in September.

Yulo captured his first gold medal on Saturday. He topped the men’s floor exercise event with a score of 15.300 points to defeat Kazakhstan’’s Dmitriy Patanin (14.366) and China’s Weide Su (14.333).

Yulo topped the men’s vault finals on Sunday afternoon after scoring 14.299 points with Uzbekistan’s Abdulaziz Mirvaliev finishing second with 14.083 and South Korea’s Jaeho Kim placing third with 13.766.

The 23-year-old gymnast also reigned in the parallel bars finals later that afternoon with his 15.266 points. Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka ended with silver (15.133), while China’s Dehang Yin got the bronze medal (15.100).

Yulo, meanwhile, settled for a bronze medal finish in the men’s high bars as he scored 14.533 points behind gold medal winner Hao Tian of China (14.533) and Japan’s Oka (14.366).

Earlier in the week, Yulo captured the silver medal in the men’s individual all-around event with 85.930 points, behind gold medal winner Shinnosuke Oka of Japan, who scored 86.065 points.

Yulo, however, missed a podium finish in the men’s rings as he finished fourth behind China’s Xingyu Lan, Vietnam’s Van Khanh Phong Nguyen, and Kiu Chung Ng of Hong Kong.

Filipina-American Aleah Finnegan, meanwhile, bagged a bronze medal in women’s vault with 13.483 points for bronze medal behind South Korea’s Seojong Yeo with 14.317 points and Uzbekistan’s Oksana Chusovitina with 13.517 points.

Finnegan has earlier secured her place in the world championships like Yulo after placing seventh overall in the women’s individual all-around last Friday afternoon with a score of 50.399./PN
