MANILA – Filipino gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo fell short of a podium finish in the men’s vault apparatus event of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics men’s artistic gymnastics last night at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre in Tokyo, Japan.
He settled for a fourth-place finish with a total score of 14.716 behind gold medal winner Shin Jeahwan (14.783), silver medalist Denis Abliazin of Russia (14.783), and bronze medal winner Armenia’s Artur Davytan (14.733).
Yulo had an impressive execution in his first jump, with the difficulty scored at 5.600 and the execution at 9.066. Judges deducted 0.1 after he stepped outside the mat upon his landing for 14.566 total points. In his second attempt, he came up with an even greater jump to score 5.600 in difficulty and 9.266 in execution, with 14.866 total, the highest among all participants in the second jump.
The Filipino gymnast failed to advance to the gold medal round of his pet event floor exercise when he landed in 44th place out of 64 competitors, as well as in rings, parallel bars, horizontal bars, and pommel horse.
Meanwhile, Kristina Marie Knott faltered in the women’s 200-meter run qualifying round on Monday after submitting a time of 23.80 seconds and placed last among five competitors in Heat 7. Overall, she ended up at 37th place among the 41 sprinters.
After the race, Knott was rushed to the medical station due to heat exhaustion, according to Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association Marketing and Communications director Edward Kho.
“She suffered heat exhaustion. Nag-stay muna after the race sa medical station for about an hour. Rehydrated. She felt ill even before the gun start. After crossing the finish line, she was vomiting and dazed,” Kho added.
On the other hand, Negrense golfer Juvic Pagunsan capped off his Olympic debut with a one-under-par 70, settling at 55th place in a field of 60 in the men’s golf tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Kasumigaseki Country Club.
The 43-year-old Pagunsan never get going after an opening 66 as he finished with a four-day total of one-over 285 – a good 19 shots behind American gold-medal winner Xander Shauffele.
Pagunsan showed some signs of life in the fourth and final round with three birdies in a four-hole stretch but never bought another birdie from there before closing his Olympic journey with a bogey at the 500-yard par-four closing hole./PN
