Cash rewards await COVID-free brgys

ILOILO City – Mayor Jerry Treñas challenged all barangays in the city’s seven districts to keep their areas free of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) for the entire month of December and get a reward of P50,000 in return.

“This is to inspire city barangays to protect their communities,” Treñas said yesterday.

According to the mayor, it is imperative to motivate barangays in their fight against COVID-19 by providing them with incentives, which can also serve as assistance in maximizing their response.

The city government will team up with the Department of Health to verify if a barangay tallied zero COVID-19 cases by the end of December before it could claim the incentive.

Iloilo is made of 180 barangays – 109 of which were able to record confirmed COVID-19 infections, latest data from the city government showed.

Since the first week of November, COVID-19 cases in the metropolis are constantly declining. For several days already, health authorities reported only single-digit cases.

For one, the city recorded only eight cases on Nov. 26 and only one case as of 12 noon on Nov. 27.

“Let us hope these numbers would continue to decline as we celebrate the Yuletide season with our families,” said Treñas.

As of Nov. 26, Iloilo City had 149 active COVID-19 cases left. A total of 4,144 of 4,328 cumulative confirmed cases recovered from the viral illness.
