MANILA – University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers bolstered its roster ahead of University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 84 by securing the commitments of Leobert Andrew Casinillo and Jordi Goméz de Liaño.
Casinillo – a former standout of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles – told Panay News that being tapped to play for the Growling Tigers is a dream fulfilled.
“I chose to commit to UST because of its basketball program, academics, and most especially because I’m sure that I’m in good hands,” according to Casinillo.
“When I arrive in UST, I’ll make sure that I’ll contribute well through my basketball skills, and hopefully, my leadership skills in Ateneo (de Cebu) will take effect in UST,” added the 6-foot-1 wingman.
Former Growling Tigers head coach Aldin Ayo tapped Casinillo to suit up for the UST’s high school basketball team in 2020.
However, the health pandemic hindered him in showcasing his wares for the Tiger Cubs when the UAAP Season 83 did not push through.
Aside from Casinillo, the Growling Tigers formally earned the nod of the former University of the Philippines Integrated School gunner de Liaño on Monday.
The Growling Tigers have been eyeing de Liaño to join the squad two months ago, according to head coach Jinno Manansala.
“We are grateful that Jordi chose UST and will be part of the Growling Tigers team. He is a big boost to our depleted team, and we hope our basketball system will greatly enhance his development as a student-athlete,” the head coach shared.
Currently, the Growling Tigers are in talks with some potential recruits as it aims to bounce back from the exit of Crispin John Cansino, Mark Nonoy, Rhenz Abando, Bismarck Lina, Deo Cuajao, and Brent Paraiso./PN
