SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – Some 284 cattle and carabaos have been vaccinated against hemorrhagic septicemia (Hemosep) in two Antique towns.
Antique Provincial Veterinary (ProVet) Office veterinarian Dr. Florencio Macuja, said in an interview Monday that from Feb. 7 to14, they have vaccinated 284 cattle and carabaos in this municipality and Hamtic town.
“The vaccination of the cattle and carabao in the two municipalities is conducted in preparation for the onset of the rainy season,” he said.
He said that the cattle and carabaos are susceptible to Hemosep during the rainy season that is why they are being vaccinated to protect them from getting sick.
Hemosep, which is a bacterial disease that causes high fever and acute respiratory distress on cattle and carabaos, is prevalent during wet season.
It could even be highly fatal to the farm animals.
Macuja said that they vaccinated 50 cattle and 23 carabaos in Barangay Durog here last Feb.7.
“There were also 24 farmers who were served,” he said. These farmers served were the owners of the cattle and carabao.
Meanwhile, the ProVet also has vaccinated and dewormed 156 cattle and 55 carabaos in the four barangays of Hamtic.
The four barangays were Pu-ao with 52 cattle and 16 carabaos on Feb.10; Guintas with 38 cattle and six carabaos on Feb. 12; Funda with 46 cattle and 18 carabaos on Feb 13; and Calacja II with 20 cattle and 15 carabaos on Feb. 14.
“Farmers who would like to have their cattle and carabao vaccinated and dewormed could tie-up with ProVet so we could schedule them,” he said. (PNA)
