BACOLOD City – The Negros Occidental provincial government is currently studying the proposed revival of the seaport facility in Barangay Bulata, Cauayan town.
Mayor John Rey Tabujara of Cauayan said the municipal government has already consulted Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson to determine if the defunct Maricalum Mining Corporation (MMC), the former operator of Bulata Port, is still committed to resuming operations.
Tabujara emphasized the need for the provincial government’s assistance, especially with the outstanding taxes, in reviving the port.
He revealed that a Japanese company, Tsuneishi Heavy Industries, expressed interest in operating the facility.
Meanwhile, Lacson clarified that MMC still has a stake in it. Properties at the seaport also need assessment from the provincial government, he added.
The renewed operation of the area might affect Danjugan Island, situated across the town, he added.
Lacson also acknowledged its potential contribution to the town’s economy, especially in providing employment opportunities for residents. (Watchmen Daily Journal)/PN
