CENTERPHIL Montessori Silver Knights advanced to the finals of the Iloilo Schools Sports Association (ISSA) basketball after an 86-83 win over St. Robert’s International Academy Panda Rockets in the semifinals at the Western Institute of Technology gym in Iloilo City.
Patrick John Gain led the way with 20 points, Jedrick Sean Tigres added 13 markers, while Lester Valn Paraico and Ian Carl Gasacao had 12 and 10 points, respectively, for Silver Knights.
CenterPhil will face Hua Siong College of Iloilo in the championship round starting 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Iloilo Sports Complex gym. Panda Rockets and PAREF-Westbridge will battle for third place at 3 p.m.
At the semis on Friday, Silver Knights struggled early in the match with Panda Rockets converting outside shots courtesy of Kevin Barranco to build a lead as high as 19 markers in the opening half.
CenterPhil started moving in the second half to come to within 54-61 at the end of the third period before continuing its momentum in the fourth behind Gain and Tigres to complete another come-from-behind win.
“St. Roberts were dominating us in the first three quarters with their outside shots. Good thing we were able to find our shooting touch in the fourth,” said CenterPhil head coach Andee Ticzon.
Silver Knights, which came from the lower-seed Bracket B, will have to beat Hua Siong twice in the finals. The latter acquired a twice-to-beat incentive for topping Bracket A.
“Our backs are against the wall but I believe that my players can pull this off,” said Silver Knights owner Mark Plagata Palabrica. “We will just take it one game at a time to reach our goal.”/PN
