CERES Negros FC came up with late conversions in the second half to stave off Shan United FC 2-0 in the 2018 AFC Cup Group stage at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.

Patrick Reichelt and Spanish striker Bienvenido Marañon scored a goal each for the Negros Occidental-based squad to tally its second win in three games for 7 points on Tuesday night.

The Busmen also claimed the solo lead in Group F standings after Home United of Singapore suffered a stunning 3-2 loss to Beoung Ket Angkor of Cambodia in Phnom Penh.

Ceres Negros was aggressive early, getting a fair share of possessions, but unable to score due to the tight defense of the disciplined backliners of the team from Myanmar (incorrectly identified as a Malaysian team in a previous report).

The Busman finally found cracks on Shan United’s backline defense in the 79th minute as Reichelt converted on an easy tap from a Mike Ott cross from inside the box.

Six minutes from that conversion, Ceres Negros wrapped up the victory as Marañon scored on a short strike to double the lead following another nice assist from Ott.

“It’s not easy to play teams that are dedicated at defending, but the effort was good and the players gave everything,” said Ceres Negros head coach Risto Vidakovic. “There’s a lot of things we have to improve [on]. We have to be more patient when we build up.”

Ceres Negros and Shan United will once again face each other a week from now in a match to be held at the latter’s home field – the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar./PN
