MANILA – Ceres-Negros cruised to its second straight win in the 2017 Philippines Football League after beating Stallion-Laguna 5-1 on Wednesday at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.

Spanish striker Fernando Rodriguez scored a hat-trick while Bienvenido Marañon added a brace for Ceres, which moved up to fourth place in the standings with 10 points on three wins, one draw and a loss.

“It’s not easy to play against the same team in a couple of days but we will prepare for them once again on Saturday,” said Cereshead coach Risto Vidakovic. The second match will be played in the same field.

With the defeat, Stallion, which came from a 1-1 draw with Meralco Manila Sparks last Saturday, slipped to seventh place with 3 points.

Ceresimmediately surged in the match after a conversion by Marañon in the 18th minute.Stallionquickly tied the score on a hit by Ilonggo Jesus Melliza.

The Bacolod City-based squad responded with two straight goals courtesy of Marañon, who drained from a pass by Martin Steuble, and Rodriguez, who scored from inside the box, for a 3-1 halftime lead.

Ceres stretched the leadin the second half with Rodriguez scoring from the edge of the box before completing his hat-trick minutes later with another close-range hit./PN
