Charges pile up against city hall policeman

ILOILO City – Barangay councilman Rhomar Martirez of San Pedro, Molo district has charged SPO1 Glenn Esguerra with frustrated homicide before the office of Prosecutor Victoria Heler.

Martirez accused Esguerra, assigned at the city hall, of firing his gun at him on Sunday night.

An administrative charge for grave misconduct will also be filed against Esguerra, confirmed Senior Supt. Ruperto Floro, director of the Iloilo City Police Office.

Esguerra managed to post bail (P12,000) on Monday afternoon to secure his temporary liberty. He had been detained at the Molo police station jail since Sunday afternoon after surrendering to Floro.

The policeman, however, has been barred from returning to city hall. Floro reassigned him to the Regional Personnel Holding and Accounting Unit at the Police Regional Office 6 in Camp Delgado.

“The higher command is working on his administrative case,” Floro said.

Esguerra, 47, had denied intending to kill Martirez. He said he merely fired a warning shot to prevent people from attacking him during an argument with three motorists outside the barangay kagawad’s house in Brgy. San Pedro around 2:30 a.m. on May 25.

Martirez, 46, told the police he chided Esguerra for disturbing sleeping residents but the police threatened him.

As he was returning to his house, Martirez said, he heard a burst of gunfire.

Personnel of the Molo police station recovered three empty shells of caliber .45 pistol a few meters away from Martirez’s house./PN
