INDIANAPOLIS – Charlotte Hornets got back to their winning ways in style via a 158-126 beating of Indiana Pacers in a high-scoring affair in the 2021-2022 NBA Season on Wednesday night (Thursday in the Philippines) at the GainBridge FieldHouse.
Kelly Oubre Jr. drilled 10 triples and finished with 39 points. LaMelo Ball had triple-double 29 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds as the Hornets snapped its two-game slide to improve to 27-22.
Miles Bridges added 22 markers while Terry Rozier, rookie James Bouknight and Cody Martin ended up with 20, 13 and 11 markers, respectively, for the Hornet, whose 158 points broke the franchise’s single-game scoring record.
Charlotte started the match by scoring 12 of the first 15 points and led 71-70 at the half. The Hornets opened the third quarter with seven straight points and used a 13-2 spurt to take a 104-82 lead with 4:18 to go.
The Hornets, which were without Gordon Hayward due to health and safety protocols, broke the franchise mark, fittingly, on a 3 from Myles Bridges with 5:14 to go and coasted to the final buzzer.
“We were due for one of these games,” said Hornets head coach James Borrego. “We just got rolling, one guy after another and just a great game offensively tonight and a great third quarter defensively. That’s what turned the game.”
Goga Bitadze and rookie Isaiah Jackson finished with 17 markers apiece for the 17-23 Pacers, which suffered its third consecutive defeat after missing almost its entire starting lineup due to injury.
Meanwhile, Cleveland Cavaliers showed that they are legitimate contenders for the championship after a 115-99 domination over defending champions Milwaukee Bucks at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, Ohio.
Kevin Love scored 25 points, Cedi Osman added 23 and the Cavs pulled off their most impressive win in what’s become a turnaround season as they improved to 30-19 win-loss slate.
Also, Phoenix Suns tightened its hold of the top spot in the Western Conference with its 38-9 win-loss record following a 105-97 win over Utah Jazz. Devin Booker tallied double-double 43 points and 12 assists to lead the Suns./PN
