Chemical spill spawns foul smell in Bacolod barangay

BACOLOD City – The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) is conducting an investigation on the reported foul smell in Barangay 39.

Anna Marie Laarni Pornan, head of the CDRRMO, said the foul smell was caused by a chemical spill inside a private lot.

A team from the CDRRMO recovered samples for laboratory testing provided by the Negros Prawn Cooperative.

For the meantime, the team advised the application of sawdust (bokbok) and lime (Apog) to the chemicals to minimize the foul smell while investigation is ongoing, Pornan said.

A nearby school and several residents had reported to their office the foul odor on July 12.

In another development, the city government will create a taskforce to regulate sidewalk vending, particularly in the downtown area where the Central Market is located.

Last week, Police Station 1 conducted a sidewalk clearing operation targeting vendors outside of the Central Market./PN
