KALIBO, Aklan – The liaison officer of the Chinese embassy in Manila said they were surprised when the Sangguniang Bayan of Malay, Aklan ordered to temporarily ban flights from China which bring tourists to the famed Boracay Island.
“Already, there were cancellations of room reservations in several hotels in Boracay. These would create economic impact to Boracay as 25 percent of over-all tourists arrivals in this resort island last year came from mainland China,” liaison officer Peter Tay said, adding he urged the Chinese embassy to give free face masks to Filipinos to at least ease the growing “discrimination” among Chinese nationals.
Tay urged Filipinos to understand as China, where the virus originated, does not want the outbreak to happen.
“We do not want it to happen but what if these things happened to Filipinos and the world will also discriminate the locals. What would you feel? In times like these, I hope we could all be united and vigilant,” Tay said.
Meanwhile, Leonard Tirol of business organization Boracay Foundation Incorporated said it is “impossible” for the resort island to become “Chinese free.”
“Many hotel and restaurant owners here were Chinese and they have friends whom they are inviting along from China to come over and take vacation,” Tirol added./PN
