BACOLOD City – A Filipino-Chinese businessman was shot to death at the parking area of the Redemptorist Church in Barangay 5.
The 57-year-old Alex Yao sustained gunshot wounds on the body. He expired at the Riverside Medical Center an hour after the shooting which happened at around 8:35 p.m. on Tuesday.
Yao’s 56-year-old wife Ma. Theresa – who meanwhile sustained a gunshot wound on the left hand – was currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
According to Police Station 2, two bonnet-donning men clad in black jackets fired at the couple who was about to leave the church on board their white Mercedes Benz that evening.
The Yaos attended a prayer meeting at the church, police said.
The suspects fled the crime scene on board a motorcycle. Officers from Police Station 2 have yet to identify and locate them as of press time.
Several empty shells of a .45-caliber gun were recovered from the crime scene.
Investigation to determine the motive in the shooting was ongoing.
Meanwhile, a local business leader expressed worry over the incident.
Frank Carbon, chief executive officer of the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry, noted that Yao’s death followed a series of assassinations including a lawyer, a village chief and a policeman in the city.
“This is not normal anymore,” Carbon said.
He also said the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) should update the public about their investigations into the killings.
Carbon added that the BCPO must deploy additional police personnel across the city, especially in some dim areas./PN
