ILOILO City – Twenty-four families displaced by fire in Zone 6-B, Barangay Boulevard, Molo district spent Christmas in evacuations centers.

The Dec. 24 blaze that raged for more than three hours gutted 14 houses and partially damaged another, according to the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).

“More or less 135 individuals (were affected),” Teresa Gelogo, CSWDO chief, said in a phone interview on Friday.

Gelogo added that four families opted to stay with relatives.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire broke out from the house of Freddie Portillo around 6:09 p.m.

From Portillo’s house, the blaze spread to the neighborhood.

No fatality was reported but two residents were injured. They were 60-year-old Veronica Panganiban who had hypertension, and H-pines Lumawang who got electrocuted and was taken to the Iloilo Doctors’ Hospital in Molo district. 

The BFP declared a “fire-out” around 8:55 p.m. 

The city government immediately distributed relief goods (food and non-food items) good for 15 days to all affected families.

Each family will also receive financial assistance from the city government – P10,000 for totally damaged houses and P7,000 for partially damaged houses./PN
