MANILA – Cignal HD Spikers bucked the absence of import Lynda Morales to score a 22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 15-4 win over Generika Life Savers in the 2016 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix with on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
HD Spikers, touted as the “team-to-beat” in the conference with its offseason acquisitions, lost the Puerto Rican Morales early in the match due to a high-ankle sprain.
Newcomer Janine Marciano took over the spot of Morales to lead the way with 17 points — on 14 attacks and three service aces — for HD Spikers, which improved to a 1-2 win-loss slate.
Trailing at 2-1, HD Spikers went on an early lead in the fourth set behind Stephanie Mercado, Marciano and Ilongga Michelle Laborte. Life Savers kept it tight but HD Spikers pulled away behind Marciano to force a fifth set.
HD Spikers’ momentum carried on up to the deciding set as it zoomed to an 8-1 lead on early hits by Marciano, Cherry Vivas and Laborte, and consecutive errors from Life Savers.
Life Savers tried to make a run behind Ilongga Shaya Adorador and Chlodia Cortez, but off-the-block hits by Marciano and Vivas put HD Spikers at set point and a block by Laborte sealed the win for the latter.
“We need this kind of win to boost our campaign in the conference,” said HD Spikers head coach Sinforio Acaylar. “I’m glad that our local players stepped up in the absence of Lynda.”
Reinforcement Darlene Ramdin and Marivic Meneses finished with 14 points apiece for Life Savers, which slid down to 0-4./PN
