MANILA – Cignal HD Spikers averted a disaster before escaping with a 15-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-13, 21-19 win over Foton Tornadoes in the 2019 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix on Saturday at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center in Bulacan.
American Erica Wilson delivered 21 kills, three blocks and five service aces for 29 points, while Anastasia Artemeva and Rachel Anne Daquis chipped in 16 and nine markers, respectively, for the HD Spikers.
With the hard-earned win, the HD Spikers stepped back on winning track and improved to 4-2 win-loss slate behind league-leaders Petron Blaze Spikers and F2 Logistics Cargo Movers, both with 4-0 win-loss slate.
The game was not easy for the HD Spikers as they have to make adjustments to fill in the void left by middle blocker Ranya Musa and second setter Pauline Cardiente by converting Daquis to opposite spiker while Mumay Vivas became the second setter.
“This win is a blessing for us,” said HD Spikers head coach Edgar Barroga. “It wasn’t easy, it was evident during the game, but we held on to finish the match and luckily we won.”
American Courtney Felinski delivered 23 points while Elaine Kasilag had 14 and Turkish import Selime Ilyasoglu chipped in 11 for the Tornadoes, which absorbed their fourth straight loss after an opening-day victory.
In the other match, the PLDT Home Fibr Power Hitters extended its winning run to three games as it defeated the Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors in straight sets, 25-17, 25-23, 25-18.
American import Grace Lazard finished with 16 points while Kendra Dahkle and Aiko Urdas chipped in 10 markers for the Power Hitters (3-2). Jhoana Maraguinot delivered the goods with 12 points and eight excellent receptions for the Lady Realtors (1-5)./PN
