ILOILO City – The Iloilo City Community College (ICCC) plans to offer a four-year course on disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) next school year.

ICCC Administrator Ma. Mathilde Octavio and representatives from Commission on Higher Education (CHED), national government agencies and the academe discussed the formulation of the Bachelor of Science (BS) in DRRM curriculum on June 21.

The program is expected to produce qualified DRRM practitioners and experts, Octavio said.

“ICCC is already on its sixth year, and we think it is about time that we add a program where students can enroll and at the same time help our city,” she said.

Mayor Jose Espinosa III said the proposed program will enable students to help city hall strengthen its DRRM initiatives.

Through the program it is hoped that the city government could “prepare better and mitigate the impacts of disasters,” Espinosa said, noting that “anything can happen anytime.”

Stakeholders at the meeting agreed to submit additional inputs for the curriculum before July 30 for presentation to CHED, Octavio said.

“We will work it out and submit the final output to CHED before Sept. 30,” she said. “[We hope] it will be approved in February next year in time for the class opening in June.”

ICCC currently offers free tuition for BS Office Administration and BS Travel Management courses. (Merianne Grace Ereñeta, Iloilo City PIO/PN)
