City Council mulls ‘points system’ for traffic violators

BY GEROME DALIPE IV

ILOILO City – The City Council is considering adapting a “points system” for traffic violations, which would align with the Land Transportation Office’s (LTO) existing traffic apprehension system.

Such an initiative aims to streamline traffic management and enhance road safety by assigning points to drivers based on traffic violations, similar to the LTO’s demerit system.

Under this system, accumulating a certain number of points could lead to penalties, such as fines, suspension, or revocation of the driver’s license, depending on the severity and frequency of the offenses.

The demerit system would hold drivers more accountable for their actions on the road and is expected to discourage repeat offenses, contributing to a safer driving environment in the city, according to Councilor Romel Duron.

The Council’s committee on rules, styles, justice, and legal affairs will conduct a public hearing today on the implementation and interconnection of Iloilo City’s traffic apprehension system with the LTO’s Land Transportation Management System.

The LTO and the Iloilo City Government are set to enter into a memorandum of agreement on the implementation of the new traffic apprehension system.

Violation points are like warnings on one’s driving record, wherein one could get too many and could lose his license.

The point system is essentially a tracking method for bad driving behavior. It aims to promote safety and prevent accidents. Accumulating points can result in fines or a suspended license and higher insurance costs. By grasping the basics of the point system, the driver can avoid these negative outcomes./PN
