ILOILO City – The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-Iloilo City District Jail male dormitory in Barangay Ungka, Jaro district has a new jail warden.
Jail Warden Superintendent Mary Chanette Espartero was relieved from her post on Oct. 15 after two years and four months of serving over 1,000 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
Espartero was replaced by Jail Chief Inspector Denver Beltran during a turnover ceremony last week.
Beltran was the former jail warden of the jail facility in Barotac Viejo, Iloilo.
Espartero was temporarily assigned in the regional office of the BJMP.
“I learned a lot. I know the next warden will continue my projects,” Espartero said.
During her stint, Espartero, a licensed nurse, was able to put up a four-bed healthcare facility, complete with oxygen and other equipment. Two nurses also render round-the-clock service.
Espartero also initiated a vegetable garden project amid the coronavirus pandemic.
She also encouraged PDLs to make crafts being sold outside the facility. The proceeds were sent to their families.
Under Espartero’s leadership, the male dormitory was adjudged as best district jail (regional level) in 2020 to 2021. She was also awarded as best district jail warden (regional level) in the same period./PN
