City drainage project completed by Feb. 2020, says DPWH

ILOILO City – Phase 2 of the comprehensive drainage project here will be completed by February 2020, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The area covered is from Jalandoni Street, City Proper to Barangay Alalasan in La Paz district, said DPWH assistant regional director Al Fruto.

Phase 2 has a budget of P173 million. Construction started late last year. It aims to address flooding on the streets of Fuentes, Mabini, Quezon, Valeria, Iznart, Ledesma-Rizal, Sinikway, and Alalasan, and among others.

“The project covers 6.6 kilometers of more or less reinforced concrete box culvert type nga drainage line with varying sizes. Ang pinakadako ang sa Sinikway-Alalasan area,” said Fruto.

The drainage project is also expected to alleviate the perennial flooding or ponding in portions within the vicinity of La Paz district plaza leading to Barangay Divinagracia and other barangays.

The contractor is MGV Construction.

Since the project is in the City Proper, a densely populated area, Fruto said work is a challenge.

“Ginatun-an naton, gina-device naton ang schedule. Indi man kita kapasobra late in the evening kay may mga residents man,” said Fruto.

Phase 1, which cost around P100 million, was already finished. It covered Jalandoni Street, City Proper./PN
