City gov’t cracks down on fake PWD cards

ILOILO City – Establishments in this city have been reminded to honor only Persons with Disability (PWD) identification cards bearing the official security label or sticker issued by the city government.

The directive followed concerns raised by the Restaurant Association of the Philippines over the damaging impact of fake PWD cards on the restaurant industry.

Joy Fantilaga, spokesperson for Mayor Jerry Treñas, emphasized the city government’s commitment to addressing the proliferation of fake PWD cards. She recalled that since last year, measures have been implemented to protect businesses while ensuring that only legitimate PWDs receive the intended benefits.

The restaurant group explained that while the 20% PWD discount was designed to assist those in need, fraudulent use of fake IDs has placed a significant strain on restaurants, particularly small and family-run establishments.

“Every fake discount comes directly out of a restaurant’s pocket, cutting into already thin margins. This isn’t just about lost revenue; it impacts employees, food quality, and even menu prices for honest customers,” the group stated.

In response, Mayor Treñas issued Executive Order No. 157 in 2023, requiring security labels on all PWD ID cards issued by the city government.

Since March 1 of last year, establishments have been instructed to honor only IDs with the official label to prevent fraudulent claims.

“This measure ensures that discounts rightfully serve those who need them while protecting businesses from financial losses,” Fantilaga reiterated.

The city government urges the public to report fake PWD cards and calls for cooperation to maintain fairness and support for both businesses and genuine PWDs./PN
