ILOILO City – The enhancement of the district plaza of La Paz is underway.

On Thursday, Global Business Power Corp. (GBP) sealed a partnership with the Iloilo City government for the improvement of the plaza – the city’s largest park and among the most visited recreation places in the city.

The development project consists of the transformation of the existing plaza lagoon into a “blue koi lagoon” and the establishment of a “green butterfly garden” starting January next year.

Mayor Jerry Treñas and wife Rosalie, and GBP president Jaime Azurin graced the groundbreaking together with GBP 1st vice president Petronilo Madrid (Panay site), Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon and Councilor Rodolph Ganzon.

“The projects will provide eco-friendly attractions,” said Treñas.

La Paz Plaza is within GBP’s adopted barangays of Divinagracia and Lopez Jaena Norte. Its improvement is in line with the city government’s plan to promote the plaza as a cultural and tourism spot.

“We have always aimed to create and participate in meaningful projects that would help raise the quality of life and contribute to the overall well-being of the community,” said Azurin.

He added that GBP, with subsidiaries Panay Energy Development Corp. and Panay Power Corp., hoped to be of assistance in transforming the plaza into a modern recreation area for culture and sports.

“May this project somehow lift our spirits as we gradually recover from the pandemic,” Azurin added.

GBP is spending P8.8 million for the project.

Treñas said the city government would also establish a P10-million retention pond in the public plaza.

This is one way to address the perennial flooding there, said the mayor.

On the other hand, GBP turned over Dungon seedlings to the local government to aid in propagating mangrove species within the recreation grounds.

This aims to increase the population of the tropical wetland tree, significantly contributing to the overall restoration of various waterways and rivers traversing the city.

GBP is a wholly owned subsidiary of MERALCO PowerGen.

As a member of the ONE MERALCO Group, GBP is one in powering the good life of Filipinos through meaningful partnerships with the government./PN
