BACOLOD City – The city government is looking for a site where it may put up a new sanitary landfill.
The new site must have the “blessing and approval” of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Mayor Evelio Leonardia said.
The selection must be in line with DENR guidelines and requirements, he said.
Leonardia said his “general rule” is that the new landfill must be “away from the urban area.”
The new landfill may still be put up in Barangay Felisa, where the current landfill is located.
Felisa “looks very ideal” because it lies at the boundary of this city and Bago City, Negros Occidental, said Leonardia.
He admitted that the present landfill is “already full” and the city government has to purchase a lot for a new one.
Leonardia acknowledged that a sanitary landfill is “a big thing … a major concern for any local government unit.”
The Sangguniang Panlungsod has approved a P30-million initial budget for the establishment of a new landfill.
Meanwhile Leonardia denied receiving from the Environmental Management Bureau a Notice of Violation pertaining to the operation of the Felisa landfill.
City hall has been meeting with the DENR to seek guidance and would be aware of any violation, he stressed.
Before his previous mayoral term ended in 2013, he complied with all the requirements in putting up a landfill, Leonardia insisted.
Bacolod is one of the first 3 percent of local government units in the Philippines to comply with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, he claimed./PN
