ILOILO City – They are those who struggle harder than everybody else to provide for their families.
They are those who can hardly get by, those who miss meals just to send their children to school.
They are those who toil under the heat of the sun and brave the rain as construction workers to help build this city.
They are “everyday heroes” that bring out the best in humanity, said Mayor Jose Espinosa III.
Marking National Heroes Day on Aug. 27, Espinosa paid tribute to not only to the country’s recognized heroes but to ordinary people, too, who do heroic deeds albeit unnoticed.
“As we commemorate our national heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom that we enjoy today, we would like also to honor our everyday heroes,” said Espinosa.
They are also those who are physically challenged yet never give up in life, he said.
They are those who wake up very early in the morning to go to the fishing port and the terminal market to sell or buy fish, meat and vegetables for their carinderias, those who tirelessly sweep the city’s streets to make these clean, and those who left their families for abroad and have to fight homesickness to provide for their loved ones back home, said Espinosa.
“They are heroes to their families, to their communities and to this city. This is why in every turn and in every opportunity, we honor them and value their sacrifices,” said Espinosa./PN
