ILOILO City – The election for new set of officers of the Liga ng nga Barangay in this city is on Dec. 11.
Barangay captain Ma. Irene Ong of President Roxas, City Proper district and currently the Liga president and Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) ex-officio member, said the election may be held in Jaro gymnasium.
The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) – Iloilo City has earlier advised the election should be held on or before Dec. 15.
Ong, who ran unopposed during the recent barangay election, is seeking reelection as Liga president.
“Mapadalagan ta liwat kay para nga maka-serbisyo liwat sa mga barangay kapitan kag at the same time, makabulig man kay Mayor (Jerry Treñas),” she said in an interview with Bombo Radyo Iloilo.
As of this writing, Ong has no opponents.
Barangay captain James Conlu’s name was earlier floated as Ong’s challenger.
The village chief of Bo. Obrero, Lapuz, however, clarified he has no plans of running as Liga president, adding he will just focus on their barangay and constituents.
Other candidates under Ong’s lineup are the following:
* Richard Dolar – vice president
* Frederick Hormillosa – auditor
* Richard Galvez, Barbara Aroza, Starlene Hosenilla, Haydee Mabaga, Reyland Villaluna Hervias, Rex Wendam, and Rodlen Gallenero – Board of Directors
Drug Testing
Meanwhile, Ong encourages her fellow officials in Barangay President Roxas to undergo drug test.
She aims for their barangay to serve as a role model for other barangays in the city.
“Sa akon barangay may laboratory da, pwede kami kapa-drug test,” Ong added.
Earlier, DILG-Iloilo director Carmelo F. Orbista said there is no law that requires newly-elected barangay officials to undergo a drug test.
However, he welcomed if they voluntarily undergo drug testing as it is one proof showing their sincerity in serving the community./PN
