ILOILO City – The city government is planning to construct a new slaughterhouse near the existing one in Barangay Tacas, Jaro district through a bank loan.
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said the city government has the option to either retrofit the existing structure or build a new one.
A few years back, the city government offered the slaughterhouse for redevelopment through a public-private partnership (PPP) via PPP Center. There were interested investors nothing concrete happened.
“We have decided, kita na lang mapaobra,” said Treñas noting that other towns and cities already have new slaughterhouses.
For now, the city mayor said, there is an ongoing talk for a loan with Land Bank of the Philippines. If the city government will resort to retrofitting only, the loan will only be P75 million; it’s P100 million if a new slaughterhouse is constructed.
Treñas said the better choice is to build a new slaughterhouse because while the construction is ongoing, the existing facility can continue to operate and earn. The target completion of the new slaughterhouse is one year from the start of construction.
Retrofitting, he said, could take two and half years to complete and the slaughterhouse will have to stop operating.
The existing slaughterhouse is earning around P2 million monthly.
Treñas said the city government hopes to commence the project within six months. /PN
