FOLLOWING its successful hosting of the 2020 Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup, Clark was chosen to host anew the bubble for the February window of the 2021 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Cup qualifiers.
In an announcement by the FIBA on Friday, the country was chosen to host the Group A matches between Gilas Pilipinas, Indonesia, Thailand, and South Korea.
The national men’s basketball team will tangle with Indonesia and South Korea.
The Gilas Pilipinas currently has a 3-0 win-loss record after winning over Indonesia last February and against Thailand twice last month. They only need a win to formalize their entry to the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon.
Apart from Group A, Clark, Pampanga will also host matches in Group C involving Australia, New Zealand, Guam, and Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, if his National Basketball Association G League schedule will allow him, Filipino center Kai Sotto hopes to suit up for the Gilas Pilipinas in the February window.
The 18-year-old Sotto said there is a big chance for him to join now.
“To be honest, it’s a higher probability in this coming window, but it depends on the schedule,” Sotto said. “We might have a G League season next year, so it just depends on the schedule.”
The former Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eaglets slotman is just keeping his fingers crossed that his next stint for Gilas will happen soon./PN
